This series, Contemporary Papers on Japanese Religion, is a collection of recent studies on Japanese religion, translated from Japanese into English by Norman Havens.

It is one of the important purposes of the establishment of the Institute for Japanese Culture and Classics to promote the international exchange of researchers and scholarly information relating to Japanese culture. Toward that end, we have published three volumes of papers, and are preparing to publish the fourth volume.

Please note that this Internet e-text edition should be considered a subset of the original print version, for the following reasons:

Sino-Japanese and Cyrillic characters included in the original print version have been omitted due to encoding conflicts with the use of diacritical marks (specifically, macrons, e.g., Shintô). In this context, we urge the broader acceptance of web browsers supporting the multilingualization of HTML as specified in "Internationalization of the Hypertext Markup Language," RFC2070, or in HTML 4.0.
All photos and most printed tables included in the original print edition have been omitted.
In a positive sense, the preparation of these electronic texts have allowed us to correct a number of typographical errors which remained in the printed editions. In a few cases, an Editor's Postcript has been appended to provide updated information, or additional references and hyperlinks.
